Yosepha Alomang : 2001 Goldman Prize winner, Papua – Indonesia

Published on Sep 30, 2013

An indigenous woman of West Papua, Yosepha Alomang organized resistance to the construction of one of the world’s largest gold mining operation, set amidst at-risk virgin tropic rainforests. She was detained, placed in inhumane confinement, and tortured for her efforts. Her ethnic group declared independence to gain control over their resources, and their actions were met with repressive and violent government action. Regardless of the dangers, Alomang continued to shepherd projects promoting traditional cultures, collective action and the well being of indigenous people in West Papua.

The Goldman Environmental Prize is the world’s largest prize for grassroots environmentalists. Each of the winners, chosen from the planet’s six inhabited continental regions, demonstrate exceptional courage and commitment, often working at great risk to protect our environment. In the process, they inspire the rest of us to do the same.
